The immobiliser light is a symptom, not a diagnosis
When the immobiliser symbol stays lit on a Mazda 3 and the engine will not start, the vehicle is telling you it has not been able to authenticate a key. The photograph on this page is the cluster on the vehicle in this job, with the warning illuminated.
That single warning covers several very different faults, and they carry very different costs. Working out which one it is comes before spending money.
What can produce it
- Key or transponder fault. A damaged or failing transponder can no longer answer the vehicle.
- Immobiliser coil / antenna ring. The ring around the ignition powers and reads the transponder. A broken winding or a damaged connector leaves a good key unread.
- Lost or corrupted immobiliser data. Stored key data can be corrupted, for example after a low-voltage event or previous work.
- Immobiliser-to-ECU communication. The immobiliser and the engine ECU have to agree. If that line fails, the immobiliser can read the key correctly and the engine will still refuse to start. On this platform a communication fault of this type is a recognised cause.
- Supply or earth faults. Poor power or earth to the module produces the same warning without anything being wrong with the key.
How it was approached
Codes were read from both the immobiliser and the engine management before anything was disturbed, so the vehicle's own record of the fault was captured first. Key and transponder response was then checked, followed by the communication line between the two modules. That order avoids the common outcome of paying for a new key on a car whose key was never the problem.
What to send first
The registration, the model year, whether the engine cranks or does nothing at all, whether the immobiliser light flashes or stays solid, and whether a second key behaves the same way. If a second key starts the car, the fault is very likely in the first key. If both fail, the fault is in the vehicle. Support for a given vehicle and the turnaround are confirmed with the quote.
